Elite Team

The Elite Team is a selection of riders who compete in national, as well as local and regional events. We are focused on competing at a high level, but still spend time promoting competitive cycling and racing in Virginia.

Amanda Eichert, category 2 road

I am living in Virginia Beach, VA. I spent years horseback riding and running cross country, but transitioned into cycling after a running injury and have been racing for five years now. I love racing in criteriums, but also really enjoy road races. Emily Joyner, Category 1 Road
I began cycling after college when I realized there were no mountains or rocks to climb in my new home, Virginia Beach. My competitive nature quickly led me to racing and I have been hooked ever since. I have an ten year old son and two girls ages 4 and 2. I enjoy street sprints, sprint finishes, and down-hill time trials. When I am not on the bike I am playing with my kids, teaching middle school math, or helping with the youth group at my church.

Emily's Career Highlights
24 first place finishes (08- 11)
23 podium places (2010-2011)

Sally McMahon, category 2 road, 2 cyclocross

I live in VA Beach and teach kindergarten at a local elementary school. I have been racing my bike for a long time and it never gets old. I now have two little boys who cheer me on at races and help me train. I love being a part of the Mermaid team, riding with my teamates and clebrating birthdays at the Mermaid Winery several times a year.

Sally's Career Highlights:

Avanell Scales, category 2 road, 2 cyclocross

I'm 30 years old and was born and raised in Newport News, VA.  I started racing mountain bikes in 1998, travelling up and down the east coast with my sister, Beneline.  At Longwood University I spent my time as a D1 field hockey goalkeeper and a music major.  I started racing cross in 2008 and road in 2010.  Although cyclocross is my passion, nothing compares to racing with a great group of ladies and working to help them reach their goals!  When I'm not on my bike, I am spending time with my husband Chris and our basenji Zuma, playing piano, and managing BikeBeat bicycle shop in Williamsburg.

Leslie Winters, Category 1 Road
am a sprinter who lives in Virginia Beach, VA and have raced track, road and cyclo-cross throughout my career. My favorite type of race is a criterium and I consider myself to be an aging sprinter. My favorite recovery drink is Champion Nutrition's "MET Endurance" (it really works!). I work for the Department of Defense as a computer scientist. My husband, Dave, lives in Philadelphia and may be seen enthusiastically supporting the team with his new Austrian cow bell.

Leslie's Career Highlights:
